Walden Personal Communicator

Smarted srl, in collaboration with Walden Technology, has created Walden Personal Communicator (WPC)

This is an app that aims at improving the communication initiative of people with language disabilities. The WPC allows a person with disabilities and severe verbal impairment to use traditional PECS cards and to send a visual and textual message (voiced and/or written) to a caregiver (educator, parent, rehabilitator, etc.) who might even be relatively distant from the person with disabilities (for instance, in another room). In addition, the WPC is equipped with an authoring system that easily allows for the expansion of the database with images and associated messages (audio and visual).

The operation of the Walden Personal Communicator is based on the following steps:

The person with a disability places PECS cards "tagged" with RFID sensors in contact with a reader (RFID reader with Bluetooth connectivity or smartphone with NF C sensor);

The signal is detected and sent to the caregiver's smartphone;

The software located on the smartphone identifies the tag and emits a visual (a digital reproduction of the PECS image) and textual (written and/or spoken) message that the carer can easily understand.
